Nevertheless, summer is still the season, the view of the Animas Valley is as beautiful as ever, and Durango is still thriving in the warm temperatures. So, come on down and enjoy yourselves in the sun!

A race between man and machine that got its start in the 1880’s, the Iron Horse Classic is a signature Durango event you don’t want to miss and it’s this weekend! The race started as a friendly competition between two brothers – the older of the two worked for the railroad and the younger a bicycle enthusiast. Challenged to a race by his older brother, Jim (the younger of the two), waited one morning for the train to pass. His brother blew the whistle and the race began; Jim on his 10-speed pedaling over the mountain pass and Tom on the train, winding it’s way at a limited speed to Silverton.

Tom eventually won, and since 1972 riders have celebrated his victory with a race against the train over that same mountain pass. Thirty-six riders made that first trek, and now the race draws more than 3,500 participants, the number growing every year. The race takes up the entire weekend (so clear your calendar) with circuit races, tours, BMX races, trials, mountain bike rides, the road race itself and more.

Whether you choose to take the challenge and race the last coal-powered train in the country, or you just want to be at the start or finish to witness the incredible feat and celebrate the splendor of the mountains, it’ll be a day you’ll never forget!

If you find yourself in Durango this weekend, lucky you! Taste of Durango, which will take place Sunday, May 20th from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, is one of Durango’s greatest events. Make your way downtown for the opportunity to enjoy a full day festival showcasing some of Durango’s best restaurants and awesome brews from four local breweries.

Nearly 40 restaurants will be on Main Street, selling tasters of some of their finest fare. Whether you fancy Mexican or Italian, Mediterranean, Asian or BBQ, you’ll find something up your alley. And for desert, chocolate and pastries aplenty. There will be games, face painting for kiddos, live music, the whole works!

It’s an event the whole family is sure to enjoy, and the funds raised for the event go to support a great cause—Manna the Durango Soup Kitchen. The Manna Soup Kitchen serves Durango’s homeless and less fortunate by providing meals, vouchers for bus tokes and clothing, and temporary lodging. Manna serves well over 60,000 meals a year with an almost entirely volunteer staff. Supporting the soup kitchen alone is reason enough to head down to Taste of Durango!

And, to add to the temptation, the weather is supposed to be perfect. Clear skies, 75 degrees –it really doesn’t get better!

If you plan on being in Durango for Mothers Day, there are a number of ways to show your gratitude to the Mother(s) in your life. Paired with a little creativity on your part, a day celebrating in Durango could include any of the following:

On Saturday, the Animas Museum is offering a “Cabin Tea Time” where mothers can enjoy a Victorian Era Tea while kiddos create mothers day cards. For more information call 970.259.2402.

On the day of (Sunday), the The Strater Hotel offers a Mother’s Day Carriage Ride that departs from the hotel at 10:00 am for a tour around historic downtown Durango.

If you’re not exactly up for cooking a gourmet breakfast for the mom in your life to enjoy- consider one of Durango’s many awesome restaurants for a brunch that will have you both celebrating.

In true Durango style, you could also opt to take part in the Mother’s Day Telegraph 10k Trailrun that takes off from the Horse Gulch Trailhead at 10:00 on Sunday.

Consider spoiling her with a day at one of many local spa’s. What about a day at Trimble hot springs with the whole family — and mom’s not on kid duty?

Or, keep it cheap and pac a picnic to an in-town park or nearby trails.

Whatever your pleasure, Durango provides great options for the whole family to enjoy a magnificent Mothers Day.
